This book contains the full papers on which the invited lectures of the 4th International Conference on Geotechnical Earthquake Engineering (4ICEGE) were based. The conference was held in Thessaloniki, Greece, from 25 to 28 June, 2007, and was organized by the Technical Committee of Earthquake Geotechnical Engineering (TC4) of the International Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering (ISSMGE), the Hellenic Scientific Society of Soil Mechanics and Geotechnical Engineering and the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Following in the footsteps of the three previous successful conferences in Tokyo, Lisbon and Berkeley, all specialized and well focused conferences of the highest scientific and technical standards, the 4ICEGE was planned around numerous state-of-the-art topics. Earthquake and geotechnical engineers, geologists and seismologists from all over the world found an excellent forum for sharing and discussing the most recent advances in soil dynamics, earthquake and geotechnical engineering, as well as their interfaces with geology and engineering seismology. The lectures include the 2nd Ishihara Lecture, given by prof. Izzat M. Idriss in honour of prof. Kenji Ishihara, offers a comprehensive overview of the progress achieved to date in soil dynamics and geotechnical earthquake engineering. Six keynote lectures and twelve theme lectures are given by international experts on recent and ongoing developments, addressing on going and unresolved issues and projecting ideas for the future.
