Electronic control devices are rapidly replacing the club for police control over violent subjects within most English speaking countries. A taser is a hand-held weapon that delivers a jolt of electricity - up to 50,000 volts - from up to 6.5 meters away. The shot can penetrate up to five centimeters of clothing and stuns the target by causing an uncontrollable contraction of the muscle tissue. Tasers have been associated with in-custody deaths and their physiology is poorly understood.
